Monks are uncommon in Aeloria, but not unknown. They belong to traditions that treat the body as an instrument of discipline, perception, breath, and will.
Where a wizard draws a diagram outside themselves and an artificer builds a device, a monk trains posture, motion, breath, pain, balance, and attention until the body becomes precise enough to do extraordinary things.
Some monastic traditions are religious. Some are philosophical. Some are martial. Some are healing arts. Some are old survival schools preserved in remote places. Some have been absorbed into Auralian academies as “kinetic discipline,” which makes older masters roll their eyes.
Monks and Power
Monks may not describe what they do as magic. They may speak of breath, alignment, focus, inner balance, motion, or the correct relationship between self and world.
To outside observers, advanced monks can look impossible. They strike too quickly, fall too softly, resist fear, cross distances with uncanny grace, or still their bodies in ways that seem beyond ordinary training.
A Scholarium theorist may try to explain this. A monk may invite the theorist to hold a stance for six hours before continuing the conversation.
Monks at the Grand Scholarium
A monk student may be studying medicine, philosophy, athletics, theology, martial history, or the relationship between discipline and magical resilience. They may also be present as a bodyguard, envoy, exchange student, or quiet observer from an older order.
They fit especially well as:
- ascetic scholars,
- martial philosophers,
- breath-discipline adepts,
- healers,
- bodyguards,
- foreign students,
- or students whose calm makes everyone else nervous.
